Artificial Turf in Malta: How to Take Care of It During Winter
Artificial turf is becoming more and more popular in Malta as homeowners, businesses, and sports facilities switch to low-maintenance, green lawns that look perfect all year round. Unlike natural grass, it doesn’t need watering, mowing, or fertilising – making it ideal for the Maltese climate.
But even though artificial turf is designed to withstand all weather conditions, a little care during the cooler, wetter winter months will keep it looking its best for years to come. Here are some simple winter care tips for artificial turf in Malta.
1. Remove Leaves and Debris Regularly
During autumn and winter, Maltese gardens often collect dry leaves, twigs, and seeds. If left on your turf, they can trap moisture and encourage moss or algae.
✅ Maintenance Tip: Use a soft broom, a plastic rake, or a leaf blower once a week. Avoid metal rakes that might damage the artificial grass fibres.
2. Prevent Moss and Algae Growth
Malta’s humid winter can sometimes cause moss or algae to appear, especially in shaded areas. While artificial turf won’t suffer the same damage as natural grass, it can still become slippery and unsightly.
✅ Maintenance Tip: Keep the surface clean and dry when possible. If moss forms, use a water-based moss remover that’s safe for artificial grass.
3. Check for Proper Drainage
Artificial turf in Malta is designed with drainage holes, but heavy rainfall can still cause puddles if drains are blocked or the base is uneven.
✅ Maintenance Tip: After a storm, check that water flows freely. Clear any leaves or dirt that might block drainage points.
4. Brush the Grass Upright
With regular rain and humidity, artificial turf fibres can flatten over time. Brushing them helps your lawn look fresh and natural.
✅ Maintenance Tip: Use a stiff broom or turf brush, brushing against the grain to revive the grass.
5. Protect Your Turf from Heat Sources
Many Maltese families enjoy outdoor cooking even in winter, but BBQs, fire pits, or heaters can damage turf if placed directly on it.
✅ Maintenance Tip: Always use a protective mat, stone slab, or section of decking under hot equipment.
6. Rinse Away Dirt and Dust
Winter storms in Malta can leave behind mud, dust, or even salt if you live near the coast.
✅ Maintenance Tip: Rinse the turf with clean water to keep it looking vibrant.
7. Keep It Ready for Spring
By maintaining your artificial turf through the winter, you’ll avoid bigger cleaning jobs later. A clean, brushed, and well-drained lawn will look perfect as soon as the warmer weather returns.
Why Choose Artificial Turf in Malta?
Artificial turf is designed for Malta’s hot summers and mild, rainy winters. It stays green all year round, saves water, and requires minimal effort compared to natural grass. Whether for your home, business, or outdoor entertainment area, it’s a cost-effective, long-lasting solution.
Final Thoughts
Taking care of artificial grass during the Maltese winter doesn’t require much work. With a simple routine of cleaning, brushing, and checking drainage, your turf will remain lush, safe, and beautiful for years.
